Inventions of the Cold War
Inventions during the Cold War changed a lot of people's lives for the better. It made cooking easier and helped alert people of fires. Also satellites helped people see into the depths of space.
Microwave Oven: The microwave was accidentally discovered by Percy Spencer in 1945. He saw that a candy bar in his pocket had melted so he tried the experiment with popcorn. Spencer immediately saw potential in his discovery. In 1947, Raytheon built the first microwave oven which weighed 750 pounds and was 5 1/2 feet tall and had cost around $5,000.
Communication Satellite: The communication satellite was used to help improve sending information from one computer to another. They were also used to take pictures of the vastness of space and its endlessness. The satellite was used by so many countries during the Cold War. The Soviet Union had launched the Sputnik 1 which was the first satellite in space.
Smoke Detectors: The smoke detector was invented by Duane Pearsall in 1967. Because of this invention fires in houses have been reduced by 50%. The death toll due to fires has been reduced by 65%. Most deaths though, were caused by a dead or low battery in the smoke detector itself.
